Sale of firecrackers banned in Delhi and NCR

Supreme Court today ordered the ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi, NCR owing to the growing pollution in the region.

The licences of all the firecracker sellers in the region have been suspended indefinitely.
The sale of firecrackers will be banned until further orders from the apex court.

The decision is believed to be taken keeping in mind the high and hazardous pollution levels in the region. Delhi witnessed dangerously high levels of air pollutants and low visibility after Diwali. The air pollution level rose above 17 times the acceptable limit in the national capital.  The extent of air pollution and smog in the capital compelled Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to term Delhi a "gas chamber".

Earlier, the bench had asked Arjun Gopal, one of the petitioners of the case to put all the materials on record with respect to extent of damage caused by the pollutants on health.   In the wake of rising air pollution in the national capital earlier Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung also decided to ban use of firecrackers, except at religion functions
